This nonprofit organization was originally founded in 1982 to offer gentle options for underrepresented people. Therapeutic art programs have been offered ever since. The organization’s mission is about offering a safe and supportive space for you to make improvements in your life. It is a kind environment that encourages you to meet and learn from yourself and others. The artistic ambiance is unique, art hangs on the walls. Once you get settled in, you will have complete access to creative workshops, art events, an art studio, a garden, and all of Chicago to explore!

Women’s Residence offers affordable, furnished rooms for women seeking a safe, welcoming, and women-only space to call home for awhile. It has a complete living setup: a kitchen, bathroom, porch, and even washing and drying machines in the lower floor of the center. The monthly rates are affordable! A room of her own to relax. Some like to go for walks to the area park, downtown for shopping, art galleries, and then come back to an artistic and supportive place to drop on the bed and catch up on sleep.

You can go food shopping and cook your own meals. Coffee & tea is always free. We try to offer a safe and supportive quiet place to stay and rejuvenate. When the relaxing is over, we are located in a neighborhood of Chicago with access to the entire city via public transportation. We are just two blocks from the Kedzie stop on the pink line train. There is a local number you can call and they give you directions on how to get around . You tell them the starting address and the address you want to go to. They tell you how to get there, what transportation to catch, and at what time, and they do it step-by-step. The number is (773) 836-7000. You can also do this online.

Most of our residents at the women’s residence are not artists, but it does make for a very wonderful experience for women artists. The gallery on the first floor and the art studio on the lower level are accessible to all visitors. The retreat is normally pretty quiet and makes a great place to work on a novel, make art, write music, and more. Here, you will find plenty of art everywhere and lots of little knick-knacks and lap robes and throw pillows to make you feel right at home. Linens are provided for all rooms. The rooms are cozy and colorful.

Off the beaten path, we are located on a quiet, tree-lined street in the residential neighborhood of North Lawndale on Chicago’s West Side. The women’s residence occupies the top floor of the two-story redbrick house that is home to the Chicago Urban Art Retreat Center. Downstairs are the office and the art gallery and art studio which you will have access to during your stay.

Each bedroom has a name: (1) Even Cowgirls Get the Blues (2) Bette Midler Room and (3) Florence Comfy Room. The Frida Kahlo Kitchen has everything you need to cook and make all your meals, it even has a humongous refrigerator! We have a small art gallery/lounge on the first floor with an extra bathroom and an office. The live-in manager lives in the back of the first floor with her dogs. They don’t go up to the second floor and no cats live here. Dogs will greet you at the common first floor entrance! On the lower level, there is an art studio and a laundry room for residents to use. It is one dollar for a wash and one dollar for a dry. Outside, there is a wonderful garden with nature bursting out all over. Plenty of greenery and flowers. A nice place to relax in the shade or sun. Our property is totally fenced in.
